What is Sublimation?
Like iron-on imagery, the sublimation process requires printing an image or design on special paper, then using heat and pressure to apply it to a substrate. Here, however, is where their similarities diverge. With normal heat transfer processes, ink is applied to the surface of a textile, often resulting in a film that changes the fabrics’ texture, while cracking and peeling over the course of its life. Conversely, sublimation ink is a dye based ink that turns from a solid into a gas when heated. It’s this gas that permanently recolors a fabric’s threads.Â
While each process produces comparable results, 2D and 3D sublimation differ on one specific point. With 2D sublimation, images are pressed on a flat surface. 3D sublimation allows for greater flexibility but requires specialized technology. In 3D sublimation, images are sealed to uneven surfaces via intense vacuum pressure combined with the aforementioned heat. Because sublimation dyes a fabric in order to imprint the image, your designs are much more durable and will never crack or peel the way typical heat transfer paper does. The fabric also maintains its original texture, ensuring your custom socks will remain as soft and supple as the day they were knit.
